that important or that unusual at the end of the day so he is a driver who is stuck terribly out of position on the grid due to the the componentry penalty that he picked up which was initially back of the grid and then turned into 30 places that's an old school 10 years ago penalty the endless mclaren honda penalties that were like 60 places 90 places started the race from luxembourg you know what
really i really hate that joke was funny the first time and now everybody's hitting it every single time with a with a long grid penalty you come up with a joke i'd like to say that i did not say that as part of the joke i said it for the same position as you i'm not i would never undercut you like that it would never ever happen but yeah it's i don't think the strategy had a ton to do with it with with the outcome of his race i mean so it made it more straightforward yeah
So to explain what happened, the opening lap stuff happens.
It becomes a safety car, doesn't it?
He pits under safety car lap one.
He pits under safety car lap two.
So he puts on a different compound and immediately discards it so that, in theory, from that moment on...
No more pit stops.
He can go to the end on the hard tyre because the hard tyre here, the C2, was specifically designed to basically do the full race at minimum deg with minimal worry about any sort of puncture or catastrophic failure or anything like that.
It's a compound that is designed to do the full of Spa in this particular case.
Especially that, yeah.
That is also a factor in that.
And then he caught the virtual safety car timing.
He swapped the...
the hard for the hard that he discarded at the start of the race, if I'm not mistaken.
So that's not a part of your pre-race strategy, obviously, at that point.
That's just, you know, opportunism using the virtual safety car.
Well done, completely right, but I don't think it was some sort of, like,
incredible trend-setting genius, and only he had the car in the track position to make that work.
When you're a fast car starting at the back, you go long on the hard compound to give yourself laps in clean air, to put a buffer, to avoid the morass and not being the same pit cycle as all the crappier cars in front.
