Years later, Vess moved in upstairs.

Sometime in the mid-1980s, Marlene planted two grapefruit trees outside her front door that had been sent as saplings from Grenada.

Marlene had feared that in the future, when she was gone, these trees might be cut down by whoever moved in next.

Vess helped to install a plaque on the wall next to the tree.
