Or some of the stereotypical claimed benefits weren't exactly what we found in this study when we tracked people in this systematic way.
So we didn't find long-term increases in creativity or people's general sense of well-being.
What we found instead were that people's experiences of mental health sorts of issues like depression, anxiety, stress, they all reduced quite dramatically.
Um, and we found increases in
something called absorption, which is someone's capacity for focused imaginative experiences.
And so that increased quite a bit.
And we found reductions in distractability.
And we also found that people's experiences of control changed a little bit.
And what I mean by that is people felt it seemed like more in control of what was happening in their lives, but at the same time, they reported more effortless kinds of experiences where people were maybe having experiences that were similar to like a state of flow or something like that, where things seemed to just occur spontaneously but with a a positive kind of element to it.
Yeah, so there were certainly limitations to this study.
I mean, this was an observational study, so we were relying on people being accurate and truthful in their self-reports.
And also, this was very much an exploratory study.
So this was the first time that we were sort of looking into many of these things.
So we do have to be certainly cautious with how much we read into these results.
The reason that we did the study in
This way was that it kind of was the most practical way for us to do research in this at this time.
You know, we weren't able to run a study where we can, in a very controlled way, administer substances or do things in a laboratory sort of setting.
And so we were really trying to come up with what is the closest way that we can kind of track this experience given those sorts of limitations.
So we uh we used the
most well validated psychometric measures that were available for these different areas to just try and get a a overview of what was going on.
