I'm a journalist at The New York Times.
I've covered China for years, and it's really, really hard to get information.
I go on plenty of wild goose chases.
One time, I went to meet a woman who said that she had been the victim of horrific domestic violence and was trying to get support from the legal system.
She lived in a super remote part of southwestern China.
So I took a three-hour flight from Beijing and several hours of train also.
When I got there, local officials showed up, insisted on trying to interrupt the interview, and eventually they took her and her family away from their home, and so I had to leave.
One of the things that makes The New York Times unique is that it's willing to pursue all sorts of stories, even the ones that might not go anywhere, because that's how you get the stories that no one else is telling.
This kind of work is in decline, but that makes it even more important.
If you think so too, consider subscribing to The New York Times.
