At which point they did everything the ethical AI world said they should do, 'cause they're not bad people.
They're just humans.
And they took out all the gender markers and all the women's colleges and every indicator that a human HR professional could see whether this is a man or a woman.
And their deep neural network did something truly superhuman.
It took the remaining dec data, figured out who was a woman and wouldn't hire them.
Now of course Amazon never put this into production.
It didn't actually um
uh kick women out of the workforce as a result of this.
But the problem to me wasn't that they didn't follow the appropriate ethical guidelines, 'cause they did.
The problem is they didn't own the whole problem.
The idea here, the why is we want to improve the speed
And fairness.
Of Amazon's hiring.
That the people we're hiring truly are the best employees.
And rather than anyone on the team raising their hand and saying
I think we have specified this problem incorrectly.
Our cost function will not actually solve that.
Versions of this are going on in every major foundation model today, by the way.
They kept their hands down and they did what they were trained to do, which was solve the engineering problem.
And they did it amazingly well and it made the world worse.
