They strike us as radicals.
They might strike many of us, to use the title of my essay, as monsters.
But there's a reason they strike us that way, and that is that they are dissenting from the things that we've never had to think about, really, before.
And that's what sets this moment as a culmination of things apart, I think.
personal freedom?
It's a huge tension.
It might be becoming the definitive tension.
either of our age or of certain issues that help define our age.
One of the problems liberalism has is that it's not a philosophy that starts from the position of like what is good for us as humans.
It starts from the position of how do we maximize people's freedom and then kind of assumes that that will be good.
And so it then says, well, there's no real case for intervening to stop something from happening
if we can't identify the harm that it would cause.
That's a very different way of thinking about technology than, say, the ancients would have used, or indeed, you know, the Pope uses when he discusses AI in his recent encyclical, which got a lot of attention and a lot of applause.
What's interesting about it is it's just approaching technology in a fundamentally different way.
He's asking, when we have something like technology, is it good for us as human beings?
Does it encourage human flourishing?
Does it enhance our relationships with each other?
All these sorts of questions.
Liberalism can't ask those questions because it would regard answers to those questions as moralistic or interfering.
So you get something like social media, which we go, we embrace wholeheartedly, what's the harm, right?
