It's very hard to imagine what's next or what the alternative would be.

It's very hard to say at a practical level.
At a...
theoretical level, it looks like basically hugely increasing executive power, the takeover of the liberal institutions of government that are meant to diffuse power so that you can impose a politics that is of the common good.
And that means sacrificing individual rights along the way, effectively is what it would mean.
Now, I don't know that that's possible, especially within the quintessentially liberal institutions and framework and constitution of the United States, but that would be the dream.
Now, when I say that to you, that sounds really scary, especially if you don't agree with their particular vision of what the good is.
That's why I think we confront or we experience these things ultimately as monsters.
And the problem is, I think the central argument, the central philosophical conundrum is that you are ultimately dealing with societies that have been
thoroughly transformed by liberalism, and you now have a mood across political spectrums that are trying to seek a way out.
The question then becomes, can liberalism find a way of responding?
Is there any kind of voice from within liberalism, from within what we would call the establishment or the mainstream or whatever, that can meet the very real concerns that the monsters are grasping at?
And this is an important point.
They might be monstrous in some of the things they're doing, but that doesn't mean they're not scratching at something real or a concern that's real.
Can anything from the establishment meet the concerns that exist at that deep philosophical level or deep within the gut?
And that would require quite a redefinition of what liberalism has done to this point.
And I suppose that's the challenge that's now before those who would identify or want to preserve what liberalism has to offer.
I think you've always got to have hope.
But I think what I would say is hope doesn't mean it'll be easy and it doesn't mean that it'll be painless.
