I apologize, I don't remember the author, but this was research that was done by a hearing aid company.
And they were trying to figure out how much can you phase shift, or in other words, time smear,

Some information in an audio signal before someone who is wearing their hearing aids can no longer make out what is being said to them.
Like the words, just spoken dialogue, just speech is no longer intelligible.
