Okay.
So there are these sections called a history that kind of punctuate the book.
And this is the first one.
She sees him first at a barn dance, as they are called at this point in history.
His muscular shoulder to the barn door, she wants, she thinks she wants to be close to touch it with her right palm.
And look, now she is telling her friend over the music.
She is 15 and something like water filling the bowel of her stomach right up to her throat.
And he is just a bit older, there in his oily jeans, his t-shirt white and clung to his chest, the leather of his jacket.
And one of those love ballads he's playing is perhaps complicit in what she is feeling when he looks at her.
or for maybe the whole length of that song or half the next.
His eyes and teeth, his cheeks, clean shaved in the manner of older boys or younger men's faces.
He doesn't falter, doesn't sip his drink, doesn't at any point turn to speak to his brothers or chat on his motorbike outside the door, such as his confidence.
He doesn't look away, though she might have expected it.
If he had or she had moved to the other side of the hall or moved schools days ago as she was supposed to.
If she had stayed that night to help her mum who'd broken three bones in her right foot, maybe her mum would.
Maybe love would.
It rained at that moment so heavy it felt like the world had ended or begun in a new way.
There exists no photo, no evidence beside her stomach full that night, his eyes and cheeks close shaved.
That muscular, not too muscular back she touched, she actually did touch, the rain pouring down like a love song saccharine on her skin, her hair down to her scalp.
No evidence, no words for this feeling she has, only her fringe, a mess of hairspray and water in her shoes.
