All of those questions are really difficult to answer unless you know what you're doing.
And that's why it's hard for a lot of people.
Has financial planning become more complicated in recent years then?
There's a lot more choice, which I think is good.
from our perspective as providers of financial advice, that's great because the more choice we have, the more we can create bespoke plans for our clients and that's what we want to do.
But from a client perspective, if you're going to try and do that yourself, especially as a GP when your profession takes up your whole headspace, it's really hard and it can feel really complex because you don't know who to listen to.
You don't know where to go.
To pick things, you don't know which provider to choose, you don't know which fund manager to choose, and there's so much choice that that can be a bad thing and cause so many other layers of complexity.
I think as well, tax is a thing.
Tax just seems to be endlessly changing and endlessly complex and endlessly burdensome for people.
It just means that if you don't know
where all the best places are to put your money for tax efficiency, then you could be costing yourself money every year, year on year, if you don't actually rely on somebody whose job it is to be able to interpret tax rules for you and make sure that everything you're doing, money wise, numbers wise, is done with tax efficiency in mind.
It's really about, well, are they making the best use that they can of any available allowances out there from a tax perspective?
So tax efficiency is really key.
And also if they're going to put money aside, how much should they do?
Where should that go?
What should they put it in?
What is investment risk?
How much return should they expect, or how much ups and downs, how much volatility?
Are they comfortable with?
