It's definitely a uh huge responsibility to be the AI for these huge uh corporations and but we also want to be able to deliver the best experience for them.
And oftentimes what we've learned on the consumer side is that users, it's hard for them to articulate what they really want until they see
different concepts or different variations.
So that's why, you know, Chuck, Chris, and myself have developed this methodology around side-by-side evals that have helped the consumer side really understand from the user's perspective what's important in having an interactive conversation with an AI.
So part of what we are trying to do on the commercial side is also to bring that type of
thinking and user-centeredness and how we think about how do we improve response quality.
Oftentimes it's easy to just look at the copilot response and think about, you know, what are the small tweaks we can make, but if we can bring that side-by-side experience and that eval experience with the end users themselves who have these very complex work context, work grounding, et cetera.
and be able to deliver an experience that actually is truly measurably different, that's the type of value that we want to be able to bring to to our commercial users as well.
Yes, and we have found that in talking to users and digging into specific intents.
So such as, you know, money and finance or uh travel or shopping or different types of intents, we do find that there are themes that come up regardless of
the demographic, regardless of the type of thing they're shopping for, right?
Things like confidence and things like understanding and trade-offs and things like that that often span across, you know, different user groups that are fundamental to the intent that the user is coming to the AI for.
So we're looking for those types of uh underlying themes that drive a lot of the preferences that users have for AI responses.
I think for user researchers,
we are often trained to put our assumptions to the side.
and really let the user be on center stage and share exactly where they're coming from, what are their perspectives.
And it might, you know, that's the type of thing that makes user research I believe really valuable is that we deliberately put away our assumptions and we let the user really drive our understanding and our and change our perception when it's very
important when to do so for our product team.
The big unlock for the evals, the UXR evals that we did was when we were able to connect the evals to the metrics, such as user engagement, retention, session per user.
And how we did that was we started with the insights, but we needed to make these insights in a way that would be transferable to other teams.
