Uh worldwide there's probably about fifty-six hundred tigers left in the wild across the different subspecies.

India has about seventy-five percent of the world's tiger population, or even a little more.

The low point for tigers was probably around 2010, when it was thought there was only about three thousand wild tigers left in the wild, um, which is crazy considering that there's probably about a hundred thousand just in India at the turn of the nineteen hundreds.

So around nineteen hundred there was thought to be about a hundred thousand tigers just in the Indian subcontinents, like Indian Nepal.

They've lost about ninety-five percent of their historic habitat.

So while habitat loss is a huge issue for them, I do think this is an animal where hunting, poaching, and wildlife trafficking um are as equally destructive as habitat loss, if not more so.

Every part of tigers from whiskers to their tail has been found in illegal wildlife markets.

Their bones, their teeth, their skins, everything has been used for health tonics and folk remedies, traditional medicine, um, status symbols.

They are an animal that has just been highly desired in that trade.

And um it's awful what it's done to them and their populations and what it's done to other cats too.

Like now jaguars are being killed in South America as replacement parts for tigers in the traditional medicine trade, and they just say they're tiger parts.
