Their brains and bodies are developing at a rapid rate, but they don't always sleep when their parents would like them to.
They tend to sleep during the day and wake at night as they haven't adapted their sleep-wake cycle to light and darkness.
Infants spend around two-thirds of their time asleep,
up to 16 hours.
Now, if you like your sleep like I do, you won't be surprised to hear humans are designed to snooze not once, but twice every 24 hours.
In warm countries, this pattern is still common, and research suggests the siesta is good for you.
And older people often need less sleep.
They tend to sleep for around six hours a night, but they can catch up with naps during the day, unlike the weary office worker.
Yes, that's right, but not all of them were men, though.
Almost one and a half million are children.
And another 870,000 of them were women.
Yeah, and the 1850 census shows there were almost 875,000 male slaves who were aged 15 or over.
But it's not exactly a fair comparison because that doesn't take into account population growth over the last 165 years.
In 1850, most African American men, almost 90%, were slaves.
So the picture's reversed.
