Taylor librarian Phillips hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2003 with a low base weight, something difficult to obtain with available gear at that time.

That's why his fellow hikers were astonished when he decided to start carrying around field guides, which demolished that lightweight theme.

But Taylor wanted to be present on the trail to know what he was seeing and hearing along his walk through nature.

That passion for being present and educated while outside evolved into the ecotourist business and wildlife-focused nonprofits that he runs today out of Wyoming.
