It starts off there in the mash tun. We're at a brewery just outside Scotland's capital, Edinburgh, and founder Sonja Mitchell is explaining how her beer is made. But there's something different about the product here. It's brewed with almost no alcohol. Sonja's company, Jump Ship, and many other brewers around the world have been gearing up for a big few weeks, as the Dry January movement, that's going a month without alcohol, has grown in recent years,

But increasingly people are choosing to reduce their alcohol all year round. World Health Organization data suggests alcohol consumption has been falling since about 2013. And according to Global Drinks Industry Research Body, IWSR, worldwide alcohol sales have been flat since 2019.

Martin Lodewijks is their president and managing director. The trend for non-elk grew initially in Europe, in the US, 10-15 years ago. But I think over the last five years what's really changed is that you're now seeing really strong non-elk growth coming out of India, out of China, South America, Africa.

The growth in sales varies quite dramatically depending on the country. Globally non-alk products are about 1% of the total industry. So it's a small but growing market. Good news for someone like Sonja Mitchell at Jump Ship Brewery. I worked with a professional brewer on the first recipe. We brewed a few different versions. One was terrible, one was okay and one was brilliant, which kind of gave me the confidence to take it the next step to scale commercially.

The non-alcoholic drinks market was pioneered by smaller craft producers, but in recent years the huge drinks companies have also got involved. Newbie feature 00, 0% alcohol.

So instead of doing what I want to do for 11 months and then behaving myself for one, I'm going to sort of try and just sort of moderate my consumption more consistently over the course of the entire year.

Johnny Forsythe of Mintel, the global research agency, says his research shows campaigns such as Dry January are not the main reasons behind the rising growth in alcohol-free drink sales. It's really the consumers being much more conscious about their health and also governments realizing that drinking alcohol puts a lot of pressure on their health systems and investing a lot of money in anti-drinks advertising.

I'll come back to that point. Caroline was touching on it. This was sparked by inflation and economics at the end of December. It is now morphed into something entirely different with so many of the protesters on the street calling for the end of the regime. But tell me more about how the regime itself is portraying it. What is appearing on state television, for example?

Caroline, let's go back to something you were mentioning a little earlier, because the internet blackout is making it very difficult to actually find out the facts of what is happening on the ground, but it has a wider impact too from all of those desperately around the world trying to find out about loved ones who are living in Iran.

Paul, let's pick up on something you said in your earlier answer. You made the point that the Iranians are saying they are willing to negotiate with the US, but only on an equal basis. But in terms of the Trump administration, do you get any sense that he is seeing this as an opportunity to topple this regime?

to be very, very careful if he decides to go down that route. A quick postscript on just that, because Jackson has contacted us to say, would US allies be supportive of any strikes in Iran?

Yes, you're absolutely right. Iran's tentacles have stretched across so many countries in that wider region. Siavash, just on the possibilities of a conflict, your assessment of how people, protesters even feel about a possible war.

A real quick one on this, because Iran's parliamentary speaker said Tehran would consider US bases and Israel as targets if they detected signs of an impending attack. So again, they are watching very, very closely any sort of potential action from Israel, from the US, and then deciding what they might do.
