And we end on some good news because part of South Sudan has been designated the country's first ever UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Boma Bardangilo landscape, a vast expanse of African savannah, is home to one of the world's biggest wildlife migrations.
Becoming a World Heritage Site is a highly coveted prize, and whilst it is largely symbolic and ongoing conflict makes Sudan an unlikely tourist destination, it's still hoped the award will help protect the ecosystem from poaching, development and climate change.
Markus Westberg is a conservation photographer and photojournalist from Sweden.
He told Paul Henley what the area is like.
