Maybe they're taking a job in a new city, but they don't have a lot of cash.
Maybe they have the promise of a job that's going to pay them eventually.
But, you know, affording the first month rent, the last month rent, the deposit, they don't necessarily have that at the ready.
I think there's some concern, especially because of the amount of debt that, you know, this group of renters has taken on from school that, you know, an additional loan on top of that is really just going to strain what they're going to be able to do.
But it's something that's arisen with, you know, certainly nothing else is coming in and providing relief with the unaffordability of housing.
Yeah.
So, I mean, they're structured kind of similarly.
The interest rates for most of the ones in the story are much lower.
They're similar to what you would find with a credit card in some cases.
But, you know, that still is a bit high.
I mean, some credit counselors, for example, urge renters to not be taking on an extra loan at that interest rate, for example.
Yeah, I mean, I think that's always the potential, right?
I mean, I think especially where there are borrowers who already have a lot of debt on hand, that that's always a risk.
Yeah, I have.
One woman told me, you know, she rents a pretty expensive apartment in Los Angeles, but she gets paid very regularly.
She's in sort of the fashion and design business and she, you know, works for herself and her checks don't really come in on a schedule that really works with, you know, being right on time the first of the month with the rent.
You know, another person I talked to lived abroad for a long time, came back to New York, didn't really have the cash needed to pay everything you have to pay up front to rent in New York City.
But for some people, I also talk to people who, you know, this kind of thing is not even really an option for them because their credit is shot by college debt, payday loans they took to cover things their college debt didn't cover.
And those people are looking for alternatives on the Internet, looking to web forums, strangers lending money to people in some cases.
Yeah, there's a company in the West Coast called Dumuso that's had a pay-my-rent product as part of one of the services they offer for renters.
