But in recent months, with sustained high temperatures and raging fires across the landscapes of Western Europe, rusty bombs and mines that date from the nineteen tens through the Cold War now further threaten the lives of firefighters as they work to beat back the flames.
As the fires clear out scrub and brush that long help bury old munition as the bombs sometimes ignite.
Blasts have so far been reported from southwest France to northeast Germany.
No one has been injured.
