But for us there was a pause.
A decision being made, perhaps.
And then the door swung slowly open.
And the building beckoned us in.
It was softly lit, and it took a moment for my eyes to adjust from the bright street light outside.
The door swung shut behind us.
And a tall, well dressed woman extended her hand for our invitations.
She was striking, with fine angular features, and her hair worn long in a tangled braid on one side and shaved on the other.
She wore an unusual accessory.
A heavy chain in place of a necklace.
Dull iron that seemed to reflect no light.
With that she turned and led us further into the house.
Now our eyes had adjusted to the gloom.
I could see just how grand this building was.
We were in a spacious foyer, with a sweeping staircase on one side and a shining marble floor underfoot.
The walls were studded with portraits, mustachioed world war generals, stern Victorian gentlemen, Regency Dandies, all with the same heavy iron chain worn proudly around their necks.
Our host swept past, and we had to hurry to keep up.
And the foyer opened into what can only be described as a parlour room.
I didn't realise rooms like this still existed.
Chaise longs were dotted around, atop which guests reclined deliberately, tall leather backed armchairs casting their occupants in deep shadow, only the curling loops of cigar smoke revealing their presence.
