The main room was dominated by a long wooden table with fur-covered benches on either side.
Along the far wall, the kitchen glowed warmly, something rich and savoury roasting in the oven, filling the space with a homely aroma that made my stomach growl.
The entire end wall was glass, and beyond it, the frozen forest stretched out in a breathtaking sweep of white and shadow.
For the first time in a while, it felt possible to exhale.
We all sat down to a home-cooked meal as night settled outside.
The kind of meal that makes the world feel briefly simple.
This is lovely.
Thanks so much for hosting us.
After eating, we collapsed gratefully into our beds, sleeping soundly until the morning.
The next morning, we discussed what our plans were for the day over breakfast, watching the snow fall gently outside.
I was itching to find some leads on this doctor and organise to visit him, but the others weren't in any hurry.
I gave in and we headed to the village first, which was pretty but was essentially just a tourist attraction.
Jed seemed impressed by it, but I was on edge, shifty and a bit irritable as I was impatient to find some answers.
I knew logically that Harriet was right, that it had been a pretty non-stop sequence of horrifying events, and I would benefit from some rest.
but the weight of a potential dismal fate awaiting me made that somewhat difficult.
We still hadn't heard anything from Dr Christensen.
After that, we headed to the forest.
It had no name on any maps we looked at, but some locals we spoke to called it Liliana Marken.
They explained this meant Liliana's lands, though who Liliana was had been lost to history.
The forest was spectacularly still, like the air was holding its breath.
