The boat eased away from the jetty with surprising smoothness.
Jez twisted in his seat to watch the fishermen, still digging with single-minded focus, as if we were no more interesting than distant birds.
Harriet beamed at the horizon.
The boat rocked gently as we pushed away from the jetty.
It shrank behind us and the water opened out.
And I rowed.
Harriet sat at the bow, grinning into the cold air, breath misting.
Jez sat opposite me, hunched into his borrowed jumper, hands gripping the sides a little too tightly.
The shore already looked distant behind us, the house shrinking into a picturesque, glassy rectangle in the distance.
Around us, the lake widened, the world turning into nothing but water and a dark line of trees.
The first strange thing was how easy it was to row.
The oars cut through the surface with almost no resistance, like the lake had thinned somehow.
We drifted further.
The sounds of the shore grew faint.
No birds or distant cars.
Just the creak of the oar locks and the soft, regular slap of water against the hull.
Then, even that began to change.
At first, I thought it was my imagination.
but the rhythm of the water settled into something too regular to be random.
Each stroke of the oars had a shadow, a tiny after-splash that came a fraction too late, like someone else was rowing, just out of sight.
