The Trump administration announced a new agreement that would see it take a considerable stake in Venezuelan oil reserves.
It's an unusual arrangement that leaders in both countries are heralding, but it's one that faces a number of steep logistical challenges and viability questions.
Evan Halper is a business reporter at the Washington Post who wrote about the agreement.
President Trump referred to it as quote the biggest oil deal in world history, and Venezuela's interim president Delcy Rodriguez defended it as having endless benefits for the country.
It's the most direct involvement the US has had in Venezuela's oil industry since the special forces operation earlier this year that deposed the country's president, Nicolas Maduro.
Ever since Rodriguez and the Trump administration have been working closely together.
Halper said the arrangement involves the US taking a 55% stake in a joint venture to access this untapped Venezuelan oil.
The key Venezuelan partner in the deal is Alejandro Betancourt, who controls the second largest private oil company in the country.
His involvement is controversial because he's been the subject of investigations in multiple countries for money laundering, though he's not been formally charged with anything.
The biggest question hanging over the entire arrangement is who will actually invest in accessing this oil.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a social media post that the deal would bring almost one hundred billion dollars in investment to the country.
But the administration hasn't said where that would come from, and Halper said many of the biggest oil companies still have a lot of reservations about working in Venezuela.
