Finally, two golden wings sprouted from her back.
She looked like something out of a nightmare.
In fact, Medusa was so terrifying that anyone who saw her face would instantly turn to stone.
So Medusa, Euryale, and Steno went to Africa, which many Greeks considered to be the very end of the world at the time.
They assumed nothing laid beyond that continent but an endless ocean.
And once they arrived, they walked up and down the coastlines searching for a place to settle.
Each time they took a step, serpents would fall off their heads and slither away.
Somewhere along the shorelines of Africa, the Gorgon sisters found a remote cave.
It was far from any city or trade route, so they figured no mortal would ever have a reason to disturb them there.
They felt that it was the safest place to live out their lives.
What they didn't realize was Athena was still very upset.
She hated the fact that Medusa had broken her vow of virginity, whether it was her fault or not.
And Athena was seething over the fact that Euryale and Steno had stood up to her.
Let's just say the goddess knew how to hold a grudge.
Mm-hmm.
The more that she dwelled on it, the angrier she grew, until she finally convinced herself that Medusa needed to die.
And in Greek mythology, the gods always got what they wanted.
But it was easier said than done.
Many found the cave where Medusa and her sisters were residing, but none of them were successful when it came to slaying the Gorgon.
