Raleigh likely heard the stories about the crash from 1897, so he figured the debris in the well must have been toxic.

And since MUFON didn't know who was buried there, they didn't know who to contact.
If it turned out this was a person's tomb, they could have a huge problem on their hands.

Now, the term spotted fever can refer to a number of different diseases, all of which can cause rashes that look like spots.
But records from the time say that lots of locals had died and were buried in that cemetery.
