So in other words, Alcatraz was too expensive to keep operating. matched

So the federal government decided to close the facility on March 21, 1963, after only 29 years of operation. matched

So for 19 months, they held on to the island. matched

But during the occupation, a fire broke out, and some of Alcatraz's most historic structures, like that lighthouse that we talked about and the warden's house, burned to the ground. matched

The government never fully explained the cause, but the activists didn't leave voluntarily after that. matched

On June 11, 1971, federal marshals, GSA Special Forces, the Coast Guard, and the FBI agents removed the final 15 people from the island. matched

The six men, four women, and five children did not resist, and the 19-month occupation came to an end. matched
