So it doesn't surprise me that the industry didn't value him that early in his pro career.

Give Cubs player development a lot of credit for that.
But when you look at the farm system of the Mets at the time, you had like Alvarez was number one prospect out there, too.
Mauricio was number three.
The top of the farm system, everyone wanted Alvarez in a trade.
Everyone wanted Beatty in a trade.
Those are the guys that, in hindsight, maybe should have moved for some players, not for rentals, but for something else.
And I viewed farm systems similar to what I learned from watching Dave Dombrowski work, which is you identify one or two guys that you think will be impact players when they come to the big leagues for you.
and then everyone else is fair game.
And that was kind of how I was looking at it.
And Alvarez, for me, Alvarez was the only one I felt really good about.
Obviously, he hasn't been the star that we hoped he'd be, but he's been pretty solid with the bat overall, just hurt all the time.
