And that was a little unnerving because that was the moment I was like, man, maybe I terribly overestimated this thing.
Maybe this isn't going to matter that much.
Doubt started to creep in.
And so then we went into a room one day that fall and we said, what if we built something that allowed people to really easily figure out what this API could do?
Maybe the problem is just the imagination.
And we came out of that room with, you know where this goes, ChatGPT.
Poorly named because no one expected it to become a massive consumer product.
It was a research preview designed principally on a web app to show people what our API was capable of.
I mean, it was strictly a honeypot.
Like the whole design was you would go and use the chat experience and then you would build something like it with our API.
And what happened next was we built the next, you know, we built the most powerful and most important consumer product ever.
And it reminded me, I mean, I had three epiphanies in that moment.
One was that the application layer matters a lot.
that you can't just create great research and expect everyone to use it.
I mean, this is going to be true forevermore.
Great breakthroughs don't proliferate instantly.
You have to diffuse them through applications that comport to how people live.
And a magical AOL Instant Messenger, it turns out, was the way that people needed to see modern AI.
And the application layer is going to continue to matter.
You just have to deploy technology in ways that comport to how people work.
