The Asian financial crisis was sweeping through the continent.
And this was something that happened when essentially it started in Thailand when the value of the baht collapsed.
And that led to sort of contagion to lots of other currencies there.
And it was feared that there's this fast growing part of the world economy was suddenly going to go into reverse and create a sort of global financial crisis.
Now, in the end, it didn't.
But it was very, very dicey.
I remember I was working in finance myself.
It was a big deal, the 97 Asian crisis.
And it was during this time the Chinese Communist Party was restructuring the economy under what was known as grasping the large, letting go of the small.
A lot of state-owned companies were being privatized and there was government support for entrepreneurship, which is kind of interesting because people think about China as a communist country.
But it's a very strange hybrid of communism and market economic, capital market economics.
A lot of people were moving to cities at that time as well from rural areas.
So you probably had much denser people, you know, a population to sell to.
What a journey.
OK, now let's take Tao from a million onto a billion.
And to do that, we all know about scaling up businesses, but she seemed to do it without sacrificing quality, which is something that can happen.
