But Tao grew up in rural poverty during China's Great Famine.
It really is extraordinary, this story.
Tao Huabei was born in 1947.
That is two years before Mao Zedong established the People's Republic of China.
She grew up in Maitan County in mountainous Guizhou, one of China's poorest provinces.
And as the local idiom goes, there are not three feet of flat land, not three days without rain, and not a family with three silver coins.
I wonder if we've had any other billionaires who didn't learn to read or write.

But in 1959, when Tao was 12, the Great Famine hit, lasting three years, and actually was the deadliest famine in history.
Also one of the greatest man-made disasters in human history, caused largely by the impact of what was known as the Great Leap Forward.
This was the radical social and economic campaign launched under Mao Zedong
And there are few open public records about this period.
Estimates vary greatly, but it's thought somewhere between 15 to 45 million people died.
But Tao survived the famine, and perhaps because they'd spent so long eating so little, she began experimenting with different cooking methods to try and improve the taste of meals for her family.
Guizhou is considered the chili capital of China.
Chili peppers grow abundantly there in their mountain regions.
