Yeah so I was actually asked to be an ambassador for it was a program that I actually really enjoyed backing as well so the aim of the program by Aviva in a company with the FAI as well was to keep girls involved in sports I suppose in particular the aim of this was to keep

involved in football as well so that was kind of the target audience but it's to educate and kind of empower the volunteers as well that working with our young players too through education and workshops as well so obviously it launched in 2024 and now throughout the course of 2025 they rolled out a number of workshops and you yourself um retired now at the moment but you're on a coaching journey yourself

Yeah, absolutely.

So I obviously retired at the end of last year and said to myself I was going to give myself a little bit of time before I dived headfirst into that because I know how obsessed I would become with it.

So I actually got a nice little opportunity to coach with the Braille Wanderers under-17 girls team, which I'm really, really enjoying.

Obviously, it's local to me as well.

So yeah, still in that developing young players.

yeah I think like I always felt as a player like it's always good to give back I think give back from the experiences things you learn the highs the lows and ultimately for me as a player I was really big on standards so it's just to keep continuing to push and drive them standards and I suppose develop young players and I suppose help them understand what it takes to become a footballer

Yeah, so I actually played with the boys until I was 14.

Yeah, well, it was a challenge I enjoyed.

I was lucky in the club I was in, it's scary that I was very welcomed and the coaches were really good to me as well.

I'm actually still really good friends with some of the guys I grew up playing football as well.

But it was when it came to that time when I had to stop playing.

with the boys as well and then the transition over to play with the girls as well and obviously it's amazing now that there's so many girls teams and I know in my local club there's just as many girls teams as there is boys teams now but that wasn't the case back then so we had to go on into Stella Maris in Dublin so I'm obviously grateful for my parents for driving me in and out there nearly every night of the week something I only appreciate now really but I think for me obviously I played with there was a couple of other girls in the team as well and they actually didn't stick with it

numerous reasons and went on to secondary school and yeah so they actually fell out of it and if I have a conversation with them now they kind of will say that they regret not sticking with a sport because they think it would have stood by them later on in life so yeah I think it's good for the girls for the coaches I think to get extra support and maybe an understanding and education of different things approaches they can take with the girls as well and then for the girls it's good that they can feel part of something special

male predominantly male until I think Eileen Gleeson was actually my first female coach when I went over to PMET yeah so yeah they were male coaches predominantly grown up as well and obviously it's great that in the space that there is a lot of males that volunteer to help out with the clubs as well now my brother helps out with the love club and then it's great as well because his daughter plays my niece as well so

Look, but I do think it's important that more females get involved in the coaching journey too.

Yeah, I think so.

And I think we need to normalise then conversations as well going forward, whether you're the male or female coach, that these are topics that are discussed in whatever environment that you're working in.
