When the Internet age kicked off a few decades ago, the continent did a lot of leapfrogging.
They basically skipped over building costly landline infrastructure like much of the rich world did and jumped straight to using mobile phones.
But the thing is, the old school landline infrastructure that they jumped over, the stuff that can actually be repurposed to deliver fiber internet, which is much more powerful, which can handle streaming, which can handle the big fancy AI-powered applications, they skipped over that too.
And now most of Africa's still playing catch-up.
Take Nigeria, where I live, for example, the country needs ninety thousand kilometers more of fiber optic networks.
It's used by less than one percent of the population because the existing networks are being expanded way too slowly to keep up with the pace.
And well, exactly.
And in some places it looks like they can.
So take a state like Ikiti, for example, which is in the southwest of Nigeria.
It's very rocky terrain.
It's about 250 kilometers away from Lagos, which is where the sub-sea internet cables land.
They've got a young and super literate population that their government's trying to turn into an economic powerhouse.
But because of how far away it is from Lagos, it's really expensive to get
These guys good internet.
But now the government's trying Starlink.
It's still pricey, but at least it works.
Oh, for God's sake, and I'm using Starlink.
Okay.
Well, this is the thing.
It's a pretty expensive stopgap.
