What significant changes occurred in heavyweight boxing recently?
this is five live boxing alexander ucik once the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world has decided to relinquish his wba his wbc and his ibf heavyweight championships he's not retired he's just given up all of the belts now a feeding frenzy will start The biggest promoters, brokers and fixers were trying to negotiate fights for their men for the titles. Well, the WBC have struck early. Within 24 hours of Usyk giving up his belts, they upgraded the German Ajit Kabayel to their full champion. And by the way, he deserves it. Also on Saturday night in New York, the Midlands hero. Well, he's from West Bromwich, that's the Midlands. Ben Whittaker won in two rounds at a sold-out Barclay Centre. He looked vicious.
But for this edition, I had a special plan. Now, it's been a very busy year. Last weekend proves it. We're halfway through, or just about halfway through. So I decided to sit down with two men, Tony Bellew and Karl Frampton, who have been at just about every single major, monumental, controversial and shocking fight that's so far taken place this year. A special half year report, if you like. I'm Steve Bunce and this is Five Live Boxing. Now, the idea is that we'll look for all the men that have won world titles this year so far, and all of the mad, crazy fights that have taken place in and outside of the zone's umbrella. We'll obviously have a look at Chris Billum-Smith in that one. I'm not even sure what it was in Bournemouth recently.
We'll look at Deontay Wilder. We'll look at Del Boy. We'll look at all sorts of things. We'll go camel riding around the pyramids, which is something that Karl Frampton didn't do, and it's something that I've found out since that Tony Bellew didn't do. I did do. You did do? Of course I've done it.
You did do camels. Of course I've done the camel and a horse.
Thanks, Tom.
I've got the evidence on my phone of both.
Well, I'm pleased about that because I've been talking to some people that went all the way to Cairo, all the way to the Great Pyramids of Giza, all the way for Rick Verhoeven against Oleksandr Usyk and didn't pay five American dollars to go on a camel. Still the lucky ones. Is that all you've paid? Yeah, we had a right deal. I never got outbonded. You paid 50 or something like that?
Of course I did, yeah. $80, but I went in a tomb. I went in a tomb. I rode a camel. A horse jumped up in the air with two feet in the air. So I've got good memories, but I paid a few quid, like.
Did you get a guide for you? Yeah. Oh, Tom. I had a guide and everything, yeah. Yeah, you actually...
I hate to say it and to be fair I started climbing up one of the pyramids to which some fella went nuts get down get down I started climbing up and this fella came over nearly got arrested we paid a policeman a dollar each Stacey Copeland we paid a dollar each right for us to get and sit on a pyramid why is it they've done that to you Tom why have they charged you so much why have they basically ripped you off see me coming champ see me everyone wants to have a bit of a scouser don't they you know what I mean if you can rob a scouser you can rob absolutely anyone Right, Tony, I'll start with you. It's only six months into a year. If this was a review of any year from the last 25 years, if this was December the 31st, it would have been an exceptional, ridiculous year already, wouldn't it?
Yeah, it would have been very good. I mean, there's been upsets. There's been brilliant fights. Do you know what? And even without all these title fights, I've just seen some fantastic fights just in general that I didn't expect. The one I seen Saturday was brilliant. I mean, Aki Fiaz and Padley were just a brilliant fight. And I didn't, I'm not going to lie, I didn't see it coming. I thought it was going to be a snooze fest.
Which fight is considered the best of the year so far?
No, you know what? I did as well. I'm delighted it turned out the way it was. It was good as it was. Well, I was on that, whilst you were there, I was in Southampton for that Chris Billum-Smith, Ryan Lozicki fight. I don't know if you've seen it. I watched it.
