The US president isn't backing down, launching his own channel, Trump TV, a 24-7 stream on YouTube. All of this unfolding as Donald Trump defends the war against Iran at the UN General Assembly, bringing his two battles crashing together on the world stage. Today, Reporters Without Borders, Executive Director for North America, Clayton Wymers, on who will lose most from Trump's war on the press. I'm Melissa Clark on Gadigaland in Sydney. Clayton, we had a very strange event this week. The president held a press event at the White House where he was cutting a ribbon for a new helipad, and he had some words to mark this occasion, but we couldn't actually hear what he was saying because of the press blackout. Can you describe this event to me?
Uh yeah, it was a it was a bit bizarre, but you know, we had Video of the president, but we didn't have audio of the president.

And obviously this happened. Right on the heels of his decision to ban three media outlets, CNN, Politico, and MSNow. And it happened to be the day that CNN would have taken the turn of providing the TV pool. And for those who don't know, the T V pool is a is a system where the major outlets share resources because there is a uh limited access in a space like the White House or Air Force One. So they they take turns on who has the camera feed, who has the photography feed, and they share those resources and it and it works well. Only a handful of outlets even have the resources to provide that kind of service and CNN is one of them. But CNN was banned the prior day and there was no TV pool. That means there was no official independent TV feed following the president as he traveled to New York where I am right now for the UN General Assembly.
Okay, so there's no microphone because the pool cameras aren't there. So maybe this is one example of it backfiring just a little bit. And um obviously the ramifications are right here. I can't hear what the president's saying.

Donald Trump had been a attacking media outlets on his social media platforms. He he does that all the time, but he'd really ramped it up in advance of this moment, hadn't he?
I would say both yes and no. He tends to go through these cycles of attacking the press. And you know, you noted it's not particularly new that Trump is attacking the press. He's been doing that since even before he was president. But one thing that's really new in the second Trump presidency compared with the first one is it's not just rhetoric anymore. He has taken really concrete actions to deteriorate press freedom in the United States. At the same time
