We're in Austin right now. We're uh doing a show for um uh Save the Muni uh with Ben Crenshaw, the great golfer. And uh so excited about it. And uh they're trying to save this golf course uh from development and uh I'm glad to be a part of it.

doing with with Asleep with the Wheel and uh Jack Ingram. There's a bunch of us on the show tonight.
Uh I did not know. I mean, uh you know, it's kind of weird because you've been around my entire life, except we're we're almost the same age. So I don't know how that worked. And then someone explained explained to me you you uh at thirteen you were you did Delta Don, had a hit with Delta Don, which uh Was it Well, it was written to Delta Don.
What's that flower you have all the faded rose? Did I hear you say Did I hear you say You were meeting He was meeting you here today To take you to his mansion in the sky I remember it. I
love the way you say it. Well Delta Dawn. Delta Dawn. I remember obviously uh Helen Reddy had a big hit with it. You had a hit with it. Uh I don't know who else had a hit with it. Uh No, that was it. But how yeah So young. How how'd you figure that one out? How'd that even begin? Was it parents? Was it you?
Well, yeah, my dad. He was the sole warrior there. He he recognized my uh my voice, my talent, I guess you could say, when I was about uh nine. And I lived in Wilcox, Arizona. So uh he asked me what I wanted to do and I said, Yeah, I'm I wanna be I want to be a a big country star. And so he moved uh me and my mother that day and started working for me. And And I never quit and he's still working for me this day. I I hear him now more than ever. But he wouldn't take no for an answer and he's really the reason. Uh he just made it happen.
Wait, he moved you that day? I Yeah. What was your I mean we went what was your dad
up
to?
You were nine. Well my dad could do everything. He he was there because um he was building the uh the um Cherlifts at Tailuride. And um I was about three years old then. And then he moved just to Arizona because he could get water well. He was a water well driller. And then he started drilling for copper. Uh and I remember many times going out with him, uh, me and my mother and uh going out with him and he'd wake me up and say, Look, I think we struck copper. Uh and it was just a lot of wonderful time. But he had a sixth sense, he was a different kind of guy. And uh from Oklahoma. Married my mother at fifteen. What? And uh yeah. And they were married for, I guess, when my dad passed in oh six, for about sixty-seven years.
So come from a long line of love. And uh my dad had a І had some kind of magic uh Uh and when uh he moved us to Henderson, Nevada, right outside of Las Vegas when I was eleven. Uh uh then uh we met some pe he met some people and uh he met a lady there that uh managed uh Johnny Rivers. And so she said, I know who you need to talk to. You need to talk to Billy Cheryl. And he's a gambler. So he'll be in town and when he is I'll call you. And that's what That's what she did. And so when he heard me, he heard the demo tapes, which were awful. Um, but uh he heard 'em and and said he wanted to meet me. So my mother and my dad and I went down to the Riviera.
