Sam Lawler, Jack Ross, came McCaulff on a wing. I didn't mind him, Taj Hotton. I think they'd like to see a little bit more around the ball. And one we haven't seen because of injury, but he's a genuine mid is Josh Smiley.
So that's the one that that's the addition that um may come into things and we talk about we talk about health a lot with with this list and and we'll do that with the with the youngsters when we when we get to them. But that's that's the key, as we know, with with this group, because if you're going to draft them them all in and draft them over a a two to four year period. Then you've got to start being able to get some games together um with them. Um and consistent use
when it comes to Josh Smiley. And the best part of two years with some others. So you you go from from that, the engine room, to the spine. To
the spine.
How strong is Richmond’s key-position spine after the 2026 season?
So the spine is is Ben Miller who I l I love. If I was a if I was involved in a club, I'd be throwing as much as I could at Ben Miller. Really. I love him. I absolutely love him as a full back. I think he plays the role so well and he sees a lot of footy, Damo, and he has to defend a lot of footy and he does it bloody well. Yeah. Yeah. I I love the way that he goes about uh go goes about it. He's certainly in the in the line for um the next the next captain of of uh of of Richmond. Josh Gibkiss, if he can get back, is part of the spine. Tim Taranto in the middle, Tommy Lynch, and McKelti LaFalle. They're probably the the four. So, you know, an adjustment there potentially up forward in the in the in the future with um with Tommy with Tommy Lynch.
Which young Richmond Tigers are key to the club’s rebuild?
The kids
Sam Lawler. And the the kids when it comes to Richmond, it it takes on a heightened focus this category for this club.
It does big time, doesn't it? So Sam Lawler leads the way. What a star. Uh he's so so good to watch. Josh Smiley, John T. Fall, Taj Hotton, Luke Trainer, Harry Armstrong, Tom Sims, Sam Grill, and Sam Cummings. So they're the main the main ones there. There's some that most of them were from that draft of two years ago. They are, and there's a couple just outside of that that have um sort of started to really establish themselves in the in the in the competition. Um and so that's that's where sort of those those youngsters start.
Are Richmond’s young players getting enough AFL games to develop?
Before you y move off the kids, uh are you worried that they haven't had the the footy that they would have ideally wanted in the two years, including Lawler.
I think I think yes, I am, and I'm sure Richmond Richmond fans are, because you see this year what Sam Grill can start to do. And then you know, you throw Taj Hotton alongside him, you know, if they can get Smiley back in. Lawler, we we've spoken about as a as a genuine star of the future. But You know, he might be the top layer, but the layer underneath needs a a group of four or five players to come through come through together. And I speak a little bit on experience with this from what we did when we did a rebuild at the Western Bulldogs many, many years ago when I was still playing and we had a uh we ended up getting
