What is the “Alcohol Is My Reward” core belief and why does it feel reasonable?

Molly Watts 0:02
Welcome to the Alcohol Minimalist Podcast. I'm your host, Mollie Watts. If you want to change your drinking habits and create a peaceful relationship with alcohol, you're in the right place. This podcast explores the strategies I use to overcome a lifetime of family alcohol abuse, more than 30 years of anxiety and worry about my own drinking, and what felt like an unbreakable daily drinking habit. Becoming an alcohol minimalist means removing excess alcohol from your life so it doesn't remove you from life. It means being able to take alcohol or leave it without feeling deprived. It means to live peacefully, being able to enjoy a glass of wine without feeling guilty and without needing to finish the bottle.

With science on our side, we'll shatter your past patterns and eliminate your excuses. Changing your relationship with alcohol is possible. I'm here to help you do it. Let's start now. Well, hello and welcome or welcome back to the Alcohol Minimalist Podcast with me, your host, Mollie Watts, coming to you from... It is a delectable Oregon today. Really, truly delectable, like 80 degrees, sunny, perfect. We look to be having some higher temperatures this week and then some rain, pretty June-ish here in Oregon, but today it is delectable. Hey, welcome back to the podcast. If you're new, welcome. And we are in the midst of doing a series this month on when drinking less feels hard. And we're taking the real life challenges that people shared with me in the Alcohol Minimalist Facebook group and

If you are not already a member of that group, I invite you to join. There's always a link in the show notes. Check it out. Come on over. We're the Alcohol Minimalists. In that group, I asked people about their specific challenges, what times or what things make it harder for them to drink less. And I got lots of different answers. And we are looking at all of these answers through the lens of alcohol core beliefs, which is something I call your ACBs. And I don't talk about them a ton. I should probably talk about them more. And so I thought this would be a way of us touching back on base with those alcohol core beliefs. And so far in this series, we've talked about the belief alcohol helps me relieve stress.
Molly Watts 2:36
We've looked at the difference between alcohol creating that short-term state change and actually providing real relief, which of course it doesn't do. Then we talked about alcohol makes things more fun and alcohol creates connections, especially in those social situations where alcohol feels like part of the experience. You know, dinners out, parties, weekends, being around friends who maybe aren't moderating. And today we are moving into another one of the big alcohol core beliefs. And this one is incredibly common because it often feels very, very reasonable. And it is the belief that alcohol is my reward. Now, before we dive into this, I do want to remind you that Mostly Dry July, the daily, is coming very soon.
Molly Watts 3:29
If you want daily support, daily focus, and a practical way to practice drinking less through July, this is exactly what it is designed for. Mostly Dry July, the daily gives you a short touch point every day to help you stay connected to your goals, to really dive into your brain and to keep practicing peaceful moderation or peaceful mindfulness control and avoiding all or nothing thinking, which is often a big trap. And we will do more than just those daily touch-ins. We're going to have weekly group coaching calls. I've got weekly brain boosts for you, a private daily podcast, lots of stuff going on. And you can find the link in the show notes. I would love to have you join us.

How does the brain learn to treat alcohol as a reward after a hard day or week?

Molly Watts 4:18
Now, let's talk about the reward belief, because this one shows up in so many ordinary moments that it can be easy to miss. It shows up at the end of the workday for some people. When you close your laptop, walk into the kitchen and think, I got through that day. I deserve a glass of wine. It shows up maybe for you when you're cooking dinner and the wine feels like the thing that turns that responsibility into something more enjoyable or kind of a ritual.
