Today we're talking about the Emmys and we're talking about race because Hollywood so often has to bring up the topic of race. Now, I'm gonna read you this out of the Washington Post. It says none of the 12 actors who took home major awards at last night's Emmys were people of color, renewing discussion about diversity in Hollywood and reminding some viewers of the 2021 ceremony, which resulted in the viral hashtag Emmys so white. Hashtag okay. It's ridiculous. All we're doing all day is looking around and judging people based off of their race, and the Emmys is no exception to that. It has been no exception to that. And because of diversity, equity, inclusion, and its heavy push within Hollywood, we're back to this conversation once again as 12 actors taking home awards happen to not be people of color.
This is ridiculous, but we're gonna talk about why this is happening in just a moment. First, let's watch a video. of Don Lemon complaining about this phenomenon taking place at the Emmys.
Why are people saying the Emmys were “all white” this year?
Riddle me this. So the Emmys really just hand out ten major acting awards and not one went to an actor of color. Ten? Not one Quinter Brunson, Io Edaberry, Oscar Isaac. Nothing at all.
I have to like kind of point out the subtle irony of him not knowing how to pronounce Io Adabery's name. So do you really care about the black actors, actresses, and the people of color when you're just like reading their names off a list? You let me know, Dawn.
Now, yes, Hero Mirai made history as the first Asian director to win the comedy directing category, in the comedy directing category. So give them his flowers. But come on, one historic directing win, that doesn't erase an entire night where every major acting trophy went to a white performer. And no, this is not about handing out, just handing anybody an Emmy Award because of their race. But when Hollywood spends years talking about diversity and representation, and people are going to notice who actually who actually gets rewarded. You can love the performances that won and still look at the whole board and say, All ten? Really? really comes about about representation has to include who actually gets the trophy too.
It's never enough for these individuals. That's what we're really getting to the heart of here. Now, notice he does mention a person of color who did take home an Emmy award, and he goes, you know what? Yeah, that's great. You know, give him his flowers. He very much brushes it off as though he doesn't even care that a person of color has actually taken home an award. And he does get to, I think, the real issue here, and it is that Hollywood has pushed diversity, equity, and inclusion for so long. So strongly. And equity is really the operative word there. We're not really talking about equality. The fact that if we're gonna judge these projects and put people up as nominees, we should judge everybody equally and not take into account their skin color or their gender or their sexuality.
That's what equality actually is. He's advocating for equity. He wants equal outcome, which means we do have to very strategically. Strategically pick which person of color wins here and where the white person wins and where men win and where women win.
