With warm water making it a swim-skin race, the front packs may be more spread out than they would be in wetsuits. The bike course is where the race should really open up. After a flatter section out of town, athletes hit steep early kickers before the main climb. From there, the descent becomes just as important as the climb, with technical corners, narrow roads, villages and very little room for mistakes. The run is flat along the coast, but with the heat, humidity, wind and bike fatigue, it still has the potential to create major movement late in the race.Women’s PreviewThe women’s race has no shortage of storylines.Taylor Knibb is always the name to watch on a course like this, especially with her bike strength. But Julie Derron, Kat Matthews, Laura Philipp, Paula Findlay, Marjolaine Pierré, Imogen Simmonds, Solveig Løvseth and others could all shape the race in very different ways. The big question is how much time Taylor needs off the bike to hold off the runners. Julie has the speed, Kat has been running incredibly well, Laura knows this course and looks back in top form, and Paula could be dangerous with the strength she has built through Ironman training. The crew’s picks:Lisa: Taylor Knibb, Julie Derron, Laura PhilippJosh: Kat Matthews, Laura Philipp, Taylor KnibbJenna-Caer: Julie Derron, Taylor Knibb, Paula FindlayMen’s PreviewThe men’s race could be absolute chaos from the start. With so many short-course and front-pack swimmers in the field, the crew expects a huge group out of the water. That means the early bike positioning could be critical before the climbs start to split things up.Jelle Geens is chasing history with a possible third 70.3 World Championship title. Gustav Iden looks happy, relaxed and dangerous back on a course where he has great memories. Kristian Blummenfelt has plenty of motivation, and Martin Van Riel could be a major factor if the Belgian train gets rolling.Hayden Wilde, Casper Stornes, Rico Bogen, Jamie Riddle, Jonas Schomburg, Jason West and others all add to a field that could produce anything from a late run battle to a full-on bike-course explosion. The crew’s picks:Lisa: Gustav Iden, Kristian Blummenfelt, Lasse Nygaard-PriesterJenna-Caer: Jelle Geens, Gustav Iden, Martin Van RielJosh: Martin Van Riel, Hayden Wilde, Gustav IdenQuickfire Q&AGuest of the week?Lisa Hassig.Where is the episode recorded? On site in Nice during Ironman 70.3 World Championship race week.Biggest course factor? The bike.
