And boom, we're on. And today's guest, we've got Paul Knight. Paul, how are we? Very well, thank you very much, James. Another fascinating story. But first and foremost, thanks for coming on the show. You've released your book as well, High Security, High Risk. Memoirs of an ex-Broadmoor patient. You've been in prisons, bare knuckle fighter. Yeah. Broadmoor. Everybody's heard of Broadmoor. It's a bit of a mad place to be. Some of the most craziest people on the planet. Yeah. You've had dinner with them, breakfast, lunch. Unfortunately so. I came across you from TikTok, you're doing videos socially.
Yeah, it went a bit viral, a couple of them. That was the first, I've been on the TikTok, but I've never gone my face on there and explaining my story. And then it just, one of them went just viral, like 300,000 views, you know? And then, so I thought, well, obviously my book's been in the pipeline in my head as a dream for 10 years. I got all my notes from Broadmoor, my risk assessments and everything, because they hold them for 20 years and you can apply for them. So I applied for all the notes. I wrote my book myself because I was going to get a ghostwriter, but he would have done a good job because he's a good ghostwriter. But I don't think he would have been able to step into my shoes. Before we get into all the madness, Paul, I always like to go back to the start with my guests, get more a bit of understanding about you. Where'd you grow up and how it all began?
Well, I was born in Forest Gate in East London to an unmarried... My father was a married man. And my mum, she took the... She took the brunt of it, if you get what I mean. Back in the 70s, unmarried, pregnant, but also pregnant to a married man. So it was sort of like a double whammy. But she kept me. You know, she died recently.
What are Paul Knight's experiences in Broadmoor?
So I don't hear that. You know, yeah, I'm okay. But yeah, in January, so I'm still haven't had her ashes back yet. So, um... Yeah, she used to visit me. My uncle used to come up and visit me. And childhood growing up, I've recently, like last year, got diagnosed with ADHD on top of my other psychotic illnesses. Whereas I believe that I should have been diagnosed way back when I was little, you know. But they just call it... that, you know, when I was getting suspended from school and in junior school and things like that, and getting on bad days, chucking chairs and tables, get sent home, get brought, and one day I got brought back after an eight weeks being left at home. And the headmistress at the time, this is a little village school in Hutton, in Brentwood, in Essex.
I know, it sounds strange. Born in London, how did I end up in Essex? Because my family originated from Forestgate and Stratford in East London and then moved out into the East Amish state, owned by Newham Council in the 60s. And from then on, basically, things went. Well, I had mental health issues from a young, young age, and it just went all unnoticed. And my mum, unfortunately, God rest her soul, she was mentally unstable herself. When was the first time you got in trouble? Officially. The ones that have been in court with you. When I was 18, I was up the old Bailey for arson with intent. I got stabbed in a pub fight. Had nothing to do with me, funny enough. I just took the fight on standing up for a friend.
But in my book, my whole life's in that book, and I tell it how it is. Some of them more drug associates than friends. Do you get what I mean? But I'm standing up.
