What's the weirdest thing about Australian dating? Kel has so many opinions.
Unknown 0:16
I've seen a lot.
Pete Smissen 0:17
As an outsider, as a foreigner who is now an Australian.
Unknown 0:22
The weirdest thing. She's seen both sides of the fence. Um... I don't think anything is weird. I think it's just different and, like, if anything, you guys are much more formal. Like, I don't know. It's a little bit more formal than my culture. Like, that is a little bit more in, like, you dating someone. Like, you know, there's a lot of weight to it. I think in Brazil things are a bit more relaxed. Yeah. And, like, you know, there's just, yeah, I don't know. Like, there's so much.
Pete Smissen 1:04
You guys can't see the face she's making.
Unknown 1:05
I just think it's much more formal and like there is a few steps to things, then probably we skip a bit of that.
Pete Smissen 1:17
Get straight to the point.
Unknown 1:18
Well, yeah, I think, I don't know. I think you guys are a little bit more formal. Yeah, I don't know. Don't know.
Pete Smissen 1:31
G'day, guys. Welcome to the Aussie English Podcast. Grab a cuppa, get comfy and let's have a yarn. So, every country has different dating culture. Australians think ours is normal. But when you explain it, it sounds incredibly confusing. And today, we're going to try explaining a little bit about why. And I guess we'll compare a bit about Brazilian culture, at least how it was 15 years ago or earlier, and Australian culture. So, if someone arrived in Australia tomorrow, what do you reckon would surprise them about dating?
Unknown 2:04
Someone from Brazil?
Pete Smissen 2:06
It could be anywhere. I mean, what... About dating. You can use Brazil as an example, obviously, seeing as that's close to you.
Unknown 2:12
Well, if a Brazilian girl, when you arrive here and you are used to not having to do much, like you go out, men approach you, that's how it goes.
Bruno Satin 2:22
Yeah.
Unknown 2:23
He... Maybe for the best or maybe not. Men seem to be a little bit more reserved. Don't come to you and say, you know, oh, I've been looking at you, whatever, I'll buy you a drink. It's not much of that.
Pete Smissen 2:39
It's been beaten into us. I think we were a lot more like that. My parents' generation was probably a lot more like that.
Unknown 2:45
Oh, really?
Pete Smissen 2:46
A hundred percent. At least I wasn't alive then. But from what I understand, it was a lot more like you would meet people in social events and you would... You would have to approach people. There was no Facebook. There was no text messages. There was no, you know, they barely just invented the phone. Yeah. That's a joke. But I think it was much more you had to be. Whereas we had obviously, you know, feminism played a huge role in the second part of the 20th century. And realizing that there were huge issues with sexism and power disparities and everything. And I think now men are very aware, at least most men, that by doing that you can make women feel very uncomfortable. Yeah.
Unknown 3:21
Well, it's a good thing in a sense that like, you know, you're not just going to read the room, you know. You're not going to approach anyone and be like, hey, do you want to make out? You know, you just really got to – it's a good thing. It's not often, yeah. But also I feel like coming from a culture where you literally exchange like – Eye contact. Eye contact. And you don't have to say much.
Pete Smissen 3:45
That is so foreign to me.
Unknown 3:46
And you just, like, you start kissing. But I'm saying that and people might think, oh, my God, Brazil is this, like... Slutty country. No, it's not. Like, it's such... You go out and you iron someone out, you know. It's sort of... That is a connection there. And you... Somehow you know they're into you. Well, you have these social rules. Yeah, you have the body language and you, you know... And then you kiss, like, I guess coming from that place here and then you come here and it's like, oh, that is not going to happen.
Pete Smissen 4:18
It was always a funny, like, because before I dated you, like, I don't know, 10 years before that, I had a girlfriend and her sister started dating a Brazilian guy. Mm-hmm. And it was so funny how she was just like, good grief, they are full on. They will just jump your bones. They will just... They will let you know that they are interested, that they're chasing you.
