What does ESG stand for and why is it important in investing?
Property investors often talk about using debt to build wealth. In the share market, that's called gearing. With the BetaShares WealthBuilder range, investors can access moderate gearing into shares, and with the newly launched GG-BL, That means exposure to a diversified portfolio of around 1,300 global companies excluding Australia, all with no loan applications, credit checks, or margin calls. Gearing magnifies both gains and losses, so it's only suitable for investors with a very high tolerance for risk. You can learn more about the WealthBuilder range of ETFs at the BetaShares website. And don't forget to read the PDS and TMD to decide if it's right for you. BetaShares Capital Limited is the issuer.

All right, Kate Campbell, welcome to this episode of the Australian Finance Podcast. It is good to be here, Owen, to talk about something we haven't talked about for a little while. Yes, we're talking about E, S and G, otherwise known as environmental, social and governance issues concerning investing and business. Yeah, as part of shares month. So we're looking at this lens in relation to companies.
Yes. So we are going to throw around some terms. We're going to talk about ethical investing, sustainability. We're going to talk about responsible investment. We're going to be talking about impact investment. They all mean slightly different things and they probably all fall under this idea of responsible investing. However, we may use them interchangeably. So we'll try and use them properly, but we may use them interchangeably. Kate, if people wanted to listen to our other episodes of Shares Month, should they start with this episode or should they be going to another one? I'd head back to our very first episode of Shares Month. They've got a little emoji at the start of the title, so you can see a little share chart going upwards.
I chose the upwards one, not the downwards one. Nice, good emoji choice. We need some positive vibes at the moment with the market. But yeah, we've got a share checklist. We've got some jargon busting episodes. We've got a few others that should be out by the time this comes out. So have a look there. And we've also done some ethical investing episodes in the past, and we did a deep dive on ethical cool ETF recently as well. Yes, the ETHI ETF from BetaShares. That was a really popular episode, one of our most popular. So we'll be sure to do more of them in the future, but that's a really good one because we explain using an example being the ETHI, we walk you through how they do and don't choose companies to invest inside that ETF.
Yeah, because the process is a little bit different. I'd say if I was ethical investing and looking at ETFs, I'd approach it a little bit differently to if I was investing in individual companies. Yeah, which we'll get to. So that's a good point. So Kate, first of all, I feel like the first thing we're going to ask is what is ESG? Yeah. So ESG is environmental social governance. So they're a three-word framework that investors can use to look at all the different issues that are relevant to a company.
