Kia ora! This week we talk to Sebastian. A former student with our institute, now living in New Zealand. He is on his way to being a fully fledged Kiwi, having recent aquired his sponsored work visa. New Zealand is one of the most popular immigration pathways, and shares many vocabulary and language features with Australia. Especially in Seb’s industry – the construction industry, there are many industry specific words that are shared between Australia and New Zealand. We talk to Seb about his experience in confronting these challenges when moving to New Zealand. We also talk about the preparation, both mental, and in language preparation that is required if your goal is to immigrate to a country like New Zealand or Australia. We also talk about the culture shock Seb experienced when he arrived and what he did to alleviate this. We also talk about the healthy rivalry between Australia and New Zealand, including the different nicknames we give each other, depending on where we are from. And hence, our word for this week – Kiwi. If you are interested in immigrating to New Zealand or Australia in the future, then this episode is definitely for you!
