Making the Paths to Commercialization of Inventions More Equitable with Aileen Dingus
21 Jun 2023
Today I'm excited to be joined by Aileen Dingus, the Commercialization Network and Events Manager, to talk about making the paths to commercialization of inventions more equitable. Aileen brings a wealth of experience from both the private sector and higher education, making her a valuable voice in the conversation on making the paths to commercialization of inventions more equitable.Since joining Tech Launch Arizona, Aileen has spearheaded the management of the NSF I-Corps Site program, guiding over a hundred teams through the program's transformative journey. She has also played a pivotal role in developing the Claim Your Seat at the Table program, which empowers women researchers and inventors within the University of Arizona community, equipping them with the tools necessary to commercialize their inventions and create a meaningful impact beyond academia.Aileen's commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion extends beyond her work at Tech Launch Arizona. She serves as the Chair of the Arizona Tech Council Women in the Workforce committee and Co-Chair for the AUTM Diversity Special Interest Group. Additionally, she has been actively involved as the Marketing and Logistics "Swim Lane" Lead for the University of Arizona's inaugural Diversity Symposium and is a member of the NOLA Chorus Girls. In our conversation today, Aileen addresses the topic of gender disparity, investor biases, and most importantly, how organizations can foster a culture of inclusivity and diversity. In This Episode:[02:47] Many organizations are beginning to recognize that there are gender disparities in the paths to commercialization of inventions.[04:50] Women entrepreneurs face biases from investors when seeking funding.[06:37] Aileen describes sessions for women entrepreneurs at Ohio State.[09:14] Having an awareness of the different paths people take to reach the same result is a big deal.[11:34] At Tech Launch Arizona, Aileen doesn’t make a lot of decisions at the higher level, but she speaks up to encourage women inventors.[14:08] Confidence can be challenging. Aileen shares effective strategies in encouraging women entrepreneurs to pursue commercialization with confidence.[16:20] Institutions of higher education have a lot of influence.[17:58] Mentorship and network opportunities can be instrumental in leveling the playing field for women entrepreneurs.[19:47] Aileen describes “Claim Your Seat at the Table”.[21:28] When inclusivity and diversity are embedded internally, the path of commercialization is more equitable.[23:27] Gather all the data you can.[25:12] Gender equity in any sense is a problem made up of more problems. The key is to not let it overwhelm you.Resources: Tech Launch Arizona Aileen Dingus on LinkedIn
