What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
Matthew, we've got a very special guest on today that we're going to do a little intro for here, Laurie Daly. Great man. Great human, but single-handedly led New South Wales to what I think is one of the great bounce-backs of all time.
What health scare did Laurie Daley face and how did it affect him?
Incredible. No one gave him a chance after game two, and massive underdogs. They said that Queensland can't possibly lose this game. Guess what happened? They lost it. They lost it.
Well, and the outside noise we're going to ask him about, you know, the people hammering the leaders in that New South Wales side, but particularly Laurie saying he couldn't coach. They were going after him quite a bit. That's right. And he showed them.
Well, I mean, Laurie is such a fantastic guy, a great guy, loved by everyone. And the fact that the media went so hard and people just went so hard on Laurie, it actually solidified the team. And, you know, I think the cash cry amongst the team pretty much, even though it might have been unspoken, was – Mate, we're doing this for Laurie. And so the very fact that the side did that for him is something he must be incredibly proud about.
Well, thanks to our friends at Barocca. Let's have a chat about some of the other best footy BB bounce backs. Have you got one that comes to mind?
Mine is not a fun one. It was 2000 grand final qualifier. We're playing the Roosters. Anyway, we were actually starting the game with a real BB bounce. In fact, at halftime, we're leading them 16-0. But unfortunately, as we're walking up the tunnel at halftime, Brother Andrew, Uncle Joey, turned to Luke Rickardson, the rooster side, and said, what are you doing on Mad Monday tomorrow? Unfortunately, that gave the roosters the BB bounce. And they came out in the second half and actually BB bounced us out of the competition.
And then didn't you BB bounce to the Super League the next year?
I BB bounced to the Super League. I did.
And then they won the comp.
And they won the comp.
They did.
Then the BB bounce.
I'll hit you with an inspirational one. Billy Slater. Yep. Everyone knows. I think he had two years out of the game with one of the worst shoulder injuries that the game had ever seen. People were questioning whether he'd even come back, could play again. Cameron Munster was killing it in the fullback position, really cemented his spot in the NRL. Yep. And not only did he come back, but hit the ground running, Billy Slater. That year he came back, 2017, he won everything. He won State of Origin, the Premiership. He won Wally Lewis Medal. He won the Clive Churchill Medal. And then represented Australia at the end of the year.
One of the most amazing seasons ever. I saw him 2016, the end of that year, 2016, Melbourne Cup. And he looked really down in the mouth, unlike Billy. And I said, hey, Bill, how are you doing? And he goes, Matty, I sort of think my career might be over. That's how he's feeling at the end of 2016. So 2017, almost an unprecedented success for an individual. He certainly had the BB bounce.
That was footy's best BB bounce backs. Thanks to Barocca. Barocca gives you back your BB bounce. Now over to Laurie Daly. Let's get in the podcast. Sorry. I know you do big sports breakfast. Sorry.
It's just hard. It's just hard to know. Where to start? I woke up and read the news about you dying. It's a tough one.
It is. Can you just take my pulse?
I'm just walking through this. Have a look at some of those pulsating veins. It looks like your blood pressure might be a bit of a worry. Yeah.
Can we just run past you? Are you enduring a serious health scare?
Yes, I am. Yep. But I can't talk about it. Okay, let's get to the bottom of it.
Does it rhyme with rancer?
Is anyone past their 50s not having a health scare, though? Yeah.
Look, very funny. Well, it's not very funny. But, no, I can guarantee you I am as healthy as I've ever been. This is a little off-colour to me. I've just discovered myself. It's a fake tan. But my clothes don't fit me anymore.
Lost a bit of weight. Mate, but you have lost. And it's funny, when people lose weight, generally people either go, oh, mate, you're looking fantastic, and then behind your back they go, oh, mate, I already might be crooked.
