How is Melbourne Storm’s 2026 season outlook described by Harry Grant?
Get into some current footy stuff, some serious, put your captain's head on. Everyone's talking about the storm this year. Last night you played against the Roosters. The run home, I think everyone's saying the run home to get in the top eight at the back end of the year. You needed a win of like five or six from seven. How have you sort of reviewing the year on the run? How have you sort of felt?
yeah it's been a different year in the regard to some of the ones we're used to and been a part of over the last few years but yeah still in a picture to you know really push for something but at the end of the day it's sort of like just getting after each week putting one foot in front of the other in that regard and A lot of the consistency with our team has been off. So just being able to navigate that each week.
There's been a lot of turnover in players too this year.
Yeah, a lot of change in players, but also a lot of sort of injuries and little injuries, big injuries and not much consistency with the team in a sense of that way. So I think it's just sort of bringing it back to each week. What's some real simple things you can control and go after? Yeah. But, yeah, like last night, I felt like our team played pretty tough, pretty gritty. Would have loved to be able to get a result off the back of that, but it wasn't to be. But, you know, if we put that effort in every week, create a bit more luck for ourselves and, yeah, we'll be in the picture.
How's – do you think – like it's been a big – probably – I think as big an emotional year since the Melbourne Storm salary cap era, like starting with the Eli Katoa situation, how did that affect the group at the beginning of the preseason? Because what he's been for the Storm the last couple of years, he's probably been the form back rower in the NRL.
Oh, for sure. What he brings to a team on the field, off the field, he's still doing it now, but you probably don't get that on the field influence, but the influence he still has on the team away from the game is huge. But I think... Yeah, probably our two real game breakers and probably our two most consistent players with the way they go about their games over the last few years is Zave and Ellie. And they're like so appreciated and valued in our team. And both of those, yeah, sort of haven't laced up the boots this year. But it's given other guys opportunities to play some footy and play and really get some footy under their belts and, and build those combinations and, and come it out, out of their shell in that regard.
Um, so yeah, I think it's sort of, yeah, it's just part of the journey and, you know, like part of the journey that we're on it's injuries and all that kind of stuff is part of the game. Um, the way the games play, the way it is, like you're going to, You're not going to have a perfect season without all that stuff and a bit of adversity. So as long as we can keep sort of knuckling down, working hard and keep pushing through all that stuff, then, you know, it can be rewarding too.
Well, even like you talk about the adversity, on top of the Ellie stuff, Zave, who has been one of Storm's most consistent the last few years, and then you get news about Belliac as well. And like who – you know, we sit there and talk about some Belliac sprays and stuff before, but – I think because majority of Storm players go there and you develop there from when you're about 18, 19, 20. So a lot of your years turning into a young man is with bellyache and he shapes literally who you are as a person. So he's very much a father figure for people, but you're also the captain of the club and you're very close with Craig. When you first heard the news, how did it affect you?
Yeah, it's pretty raw but pretty real as well. Like I said, everyone sort of goes through that adversity or you don't really know what's around the corner too much. So it's just about enjoying what you have and where you are and what you're in. Don't be comfortable with where you're at.
