20 Jan 2026

Transcription

Chapter 1: What are Dave Dombrowski's thoughts on Bo Bichette's negotiations?

0.031 - 26.139 JT Realmuto

All right, let's go to Pat Gallen first. Pat. Morning, guys. JT, just wanted to know if there was ever a time in this process where you thought maybe, you know, you wouldn't be a Philadelphia Philly and, you know, obviously you are now, so it's all worked out. But was there ever a time in this process where you thought, you know, you had to think about not being in Philadelphia?

0

26.812 - 36.166 JT Realmuto

Uh, yeah, there was, I mean, there towards the end, there was a short time, um, where obviously there's no secret that, you know, the Phillies had other opportunities.

0

36.186 - 50.608 JT Realmuto

And then myself as well, I was looking at other teams, um, there at the end, it got a little stressful to where, you know, we thought there was an opportunity or a chance that we weren't gonna be back, which, um, you know, obviously it wasn't ideal for us. We made it pretty clear that we want to be with the Phillies from the start.

0

50.649 - 74.399 JT Realmuto

So luckily that, that didn't last too long and we were able to come together and get a deal done. Let's go to Matt Gelb next. Matt. JT, I'm wondering, in your mind, you've gone through long free agent stretches before. This last time took a while. Was this one any different in your mind?

Chapter 2: How did the Phillies approach the free agency process this year?

74.96 - 100.111 JT Realmuto

How was it different? And what do you think about how the team shapes up now here late January? Um, yeah, it was different just in the sense of, you know, where I'm at in my career. Uh, the goals were really kind of different for us and obviously for the Phillies as well. Um, I was just the main thing for me, you know, I know how the game works and I know, um, there's certain values on players.

0

100.131 - 116.014 JT Realmuto

And at the end of the day, I just value myself and what I do for the team and the clubhouse differently than what the Phillies did for a while. So that's why it took longer than they maybe should have. And, um, As far as the team goes, I think we shape up pretty good. I mean, obviously we had a good year last year, won the division.

0

116.074 - 135.702 JT Realmuto

Didn't work out for us in the postseason, but we're bringing a lot of the same guys back and having some new good pieces. So I'm excited for this year. That difference in value, is that something you just brush aside now? I mean, I know you've been at different points in your career, maybe where you've had, I don't want to say acrimonious negotiations, but maybe disagreements.

0

135.742 - 137.565 JT Realmuto

Like how does that, you know,

0

Chapter 3: What factors influenced JT Realmuto's decision to stay with the Phillies?

137.663 - 152.343 JT Realmuto

you resigned for three years. So obviously like you came to an agreement, but how do you, I mean, it can be kind of a weird thing, right? Yeah. I don't know. I'm in a weird spot where like, for me, it sucks that like the catchers, in my opinion, catchers are just undervalued in this game as far as contracts and dollars go.

0

152.683 - 168.106 JT Realmuto

Um, I, I truly believe it's, you know, one of, if not the most important position on the field. And, uh, so like, I just enjoy fighting for that. Like I believe in that value and, um, the Phillies did for a long time ago. I mean, I know they believe in it as well. It's just the dollars look different.

0

168.206 - 187.093 JT Realmuto

And luckily, you know, after the Phillies, uh, missed out on an opportunity there at the end, they called back and were able to make something happen and improve their offer and get to a place that we were happy with. Okay. Let's go to Scott Lauer next. JT, um,

0

Chapter 4: How does JT Realmuto view the value of catchers in the current market?

187.394 - 210.77 JT Realmuto

At other points in your career, you have fought that fight for catcher salaries and whatnot. I wonder, at this stage of your career, in this particular free agency, what was your priority? What was your biggest priority? Was it going to a place where you had a chance to win? Was it still fighting for catcher salaries and setting the bar or helping to raise it?

0

211.25 - 231.812 JT Realmuto

What was your priority this time around? It was less about setting a bar or raising anything, you know, because I mean, I know I'm pretty self-aware. I didn't have the last couple of years. I haven't really been happy with my performance. So it was more it was about my family for me and their comfort and how much we love Philadelphia and

0

232.72 - 244.997 JT Realmuto

Like I said, there was only a short period of time this offseason where I even thought I wasn't coming back to Philadelphia. The whole time, this is where we wanted to be, and things got a little hairy there at the end, but I'm glad we're back here, and this is where we want to be the whole time.

0

245.017 - 262.532 JT Realmuto

So really my focus was just on my legacy here and being able to finish my career with the Phillies and not having to uproot my family and start over. When you said it kind of got hairy at the end there, I mean, were you kind of – Were you kind of lining up, you know, other possibilities as well at that point?

0

Chapter 5: What are the Phillies' roster plans for the upcoming season?

262.612 - 286.797 JT Realmuto

Or how quickly could you have potentially moved, pivoted if you had to? Yeah, I mean, I had other opportunities for sure, but obviously the Phillies had things going on their end as well. So that's the nature of the beast. So we had to be ready to go somewhere else if we needed to. And we had those opportunities, but obviously that's not what we wanted to happen. Okay, let's go to Jason next.

0

287.058 - 315.801 JT Realmuto

Jason? Hey, JT. You kind of just referred to it, obviously, the business part of this game. It became apparent throughout the process. But after that final game in L.A. when we were talking to Kyle, he mentioned just even aside from baseball, just the other things, how the community has embraced him, how his family feels welcomed here, how important that has become to him.

0

316.422 - 323.432 JT Realmuto

How much did that kind of play a part into you wanting to come back? Obviously, everyone's going to have their own prerogative.

0

Chapter 6: How does Dave Dombrowski evaluate the team's performance last season?

323.612 - 336.1 JT Realmuto

But just what do you feel about this community and how comfortable have you gotten here in Philly and being one of the leaders for this franchise and one of the faces for the franchise? Yeah, I mean, that honestly played a huge role in it.

0

336.974 - 348.426 JT Realmuto

like I mentioned for that brief period where we weren't certain whether we were going to be Phillies or not, you know, the, it's funny, the thing that my wife and I thought about and spoke about the most were just the people that are involved in the organization and the fans.

0

349.367 - 363.302 JT Realmuto

And I mean, I could go on and on with a list of names and people in this organization that have just welcomed us and embraced us and really been a family, family to us. So that was the hardest part was thinking about not being able to be with those people, my teammates and,

0

363.282 - 384.801 JT Realmuto

um there's like i said there's so many names that i could name off to you that we were thinking of and speaking of and like almost going through a period where we're mourning not being with these relationships that we've built so that's really what it came down to for us like that was so important to us and to be able to continue those relationships and build on them go to todd zalecki next todd

0

386.384 - 407.141 Todd Zielecki

Hey, JT, as you've kind of gone through this process a couple times now for agency, you hear a lot of everybody from the top down in this organization say JT game plans great, calls a game great, pitch-to-pitch adjustments, leadership, all that stuff. How frustrating or challenging is that to kind of put a dollar sign on that for you?

407.863 - 419.26 Todd Zielecki

You know, you bring all this value, but then it comes to contract negotiation time and they might be looking at, you know, they may be focusing on offensive performance the past season or age or whatever it might be.

419.898 - 438.302 JT Realmuto

Yeah, it's definitely frustrating. You know, like I said, I believe in myself and I believe that I bring value to the team. And I know that I haven't had my best years the last couple of years, but I do believe that it's not like age or physically related. It's something that I can improve on and work on and be better for the years to come.

438.362 - 448.515 JT Realmuto

So it's definitely frustrating the way the system plays out and the way that catchers are valued. And obviously, I understand the aging process where everybody ages and everybody deteriorates.

Chapter 7: What challenges did the Phillies face during the offseason?

448.535 - 455.811 JT Realmuto

So That side of it I get. It's just I don't feel like I'm at that point in my career yet to where I feel like I still have good years left in me.

0

456.078 - 472.354 Todd Zielecki

And then like last week, as things kind of got hairy, like how was it presented to you? Like you need to hold off right now. We might have something else going. In other words, if you had called them up at a certain day, say, I'll take what you offered. Was that offer off the table or can you give us any detail on that?

0

473.915 - 481.883 JT Realmuto

I'll let Dave speak to that, whatever he wants to reveal, how those conversations went. Got it. Thanks. Yeah, let's go to Howard. Howard.

0

483.55 - 487.28 Howard

Thank you, guys. JT, one for you and Dave, one for you.

0

Chapter 8: What is the outlook for the Phillies as they head into spring training?

487.3 - 509.983 Howard

JT, you talked about the aging curve as it relates to catchers and the number of catchers, 35 and beyond, who have succeeded are fairly limited, especially the last 40 years. You go back, age 31 through 34, the only one who's had more war during that period of time than you since 1980 is Jorge Posada.

0

510.043 - 518.411 Howard

So what is it you think about your career that has allowed you to kind of defy those aging curves? And how do you look to continue that?

0

520.534 - 541.503 JT Realmuto

I just have a good group around me that helps me take care of my body, really. I think the Philly staff is incredible. They're a strength staff. training staff, everybody that just helps keep my body in the position that allows me to go out there and perform. And I take a lot of pride in that and it takes a lot of work. But I enjoy that process. It's something I enjoy doing.

0

541.524 - 551.323 JT Realmuto

I enjoy being out there for my teammates. So the work part of it, I enjoy, but I couldn't do it myself without the help of the strength conditioning staff, the training staff and all those guys.

0

551.59 - 567.971 Howard

And Dave, just similarly for you, just being able to see that JT has kind of beaten the aging curves of what we've typically seen from cashers over the last 40, 50 years. How much does that play a part in you being comfortable not just bringing him back, but bringing him back for three years?

568.952 - 597.291 Dave Dombrowski

Well, a great deal. I mean, I think you're talking about a unique individual as far as not only work ethic and looking to continue to succeed, but also when you look at the athleticism for a catcher, what he puts forward, how he works with not only the pitching staff, but the training staff and what he puts forward. He's a great athlete. I mean, a lot of times you don't see –

597.406 - 625.295 Dave Dombrowski

catchers in that same type of situation so JT's a great athlete it definitely plays into it and it's a hard question I'm not sitting here saying that anybody has an exact formula on this you look at what other catchers have done you look at the history perspective But then you have outliers too. And JT continues to be one of the best players at his position in the game.

626.336 - 648.439 Dave Dombrowski

So it definitely comes into the process of do we think he can play for three more years successfully? Yeah, who knows? As much as we fight it and say, okay, well, do we want to go three years? Do we want to go three years? Yes, we do go three years. It wouldn't shock me if you're sitting here in another three years and JT's talking about a multi-year contract beyond that.

648.52 - 661.607 Dave Dombrowski

I mean, he's that type of individual, but it's a real hard question to answer. And you look at historical aspects. But I also think you're talking about a unique individual that will continue to perform very well. Thank you both.
