Why do strategy and authority get confused in Human Design?
If there are two words in human design that seem to get tangled together almost immediately, it's strategy and authority. You hear people say, just follow your strategy, or just follow your authority. And sometimes it almost sounds like they're giving you the same advice, but they're not. They actually have very different roles. And honestly, it took me longer than I want to admit to really understand the difference, not just intellectually, but in my own life. Because when you're first learning human design, there are so many concepts coming at you at once. Your type, your strategy, your authority, your profile, your centers. And you can easily start thinking, okay, so what exactly am I supposed to do with all of this?
I remember having moments where I thought I was following my authority, but I was actually just waiting for something to happen. Or I thought I was following my strategy when really I was trying to make a decision in my head and then looking for human design to somehow confirm it. And I think this is where a lot of people get stuck. Human design isn't really about collecting more information about yourself. At some point, you have to take these concepts out of the chart and actually use them in your everyday life. When you're making decisions, choosing relationships, starting something new, saying yes, saying no, or simply figuring out what feels right for you. And that's where strategy and authority become really practical.
So, in today's episode, I want to slow this down and really untangle these two concepts. What is strategy actually asking you to do? What is authority responsible for? Why do you need both? And perhaps most importantly, how do they work together when you're making real-life decisions? Because once you understand that difference, a lot of the confusing advice you hear around human design starts to make much more sense. And you may also start to notice something interesting. You're not actually supposed to have all the answers in your head. Your strategy and authority are there to give you a different way of navigating life, one that is much more connected to your own energy and your own inner decision-making process.
So let's break it down, step by step, and make strategy and authority feel a lot less complicated. Strategy is really about timing and positioning. I like to think of it as the outer mechanic of human design, because it describes how you are designed to engage with the world around you, rather than telling you exactly what you should choose or what direction your life should take. It gives you a way of moving through life that is more aligned with your energy, instead of constantly trying to push, initiate, control, or force things to happen. For a generator, that means responding to what life brings to them rather than constantly trying to initiate everything from the mind. A generator's strategy is to respond, which can mean responding to an opportunity, a person, an invitation, a conversation, a question, or simply something that appears in their environment and creates a genuine energetic response within them.
It is not about sitting around and doing nothing, and it certainly does not mean that generators cannot be proactive or ambitious. It is more about allowing something to appear first and then noticing how their energy responds to it. For a projector, the strategy is to wait for the invitation, particularly when it comes to the areas of life where recognition and the correct invitation really matter, such as relationships, career opportunities, major collaborations, or being given an important role in someone else's life. This does not mean that a projector has to sit quietly and wait for someone to magically discover them. A projector can absolutely share their knowledge, create content, build something, learn, teach, and make themselves visible.
But there is a difference between making yourself available to be recognized and trying to force your way into places where there has been no recognition or invitation.
