Be The Girl Podcast
Episode 26: creating a social enterprise, the reality of menstrual stigma & period poverty plus how to make a difference with co-founder of Taboo, Isobel Marshall
21 Oct 2020
A special episode in partnership with Hey Poppy for the Hey Poppy Virtual Expo 2020. After finishing high school in 2016, Isobel Marshall and Eloise Hall founded the Adelaide based social enterprise TABOO. TABOO exists to sell 100% organic cotton pads and tampons to customers in Australia, with all net profits donated to fight period poverty. Eloise is currently in her third year studying Business and International Relations at Flinders University and is using the skills she is learning in her role as managing director of TABOO. Isobel is in her third year of medicine at Adelaide University and working as the Director of Health and Education. I was delighted to chat to Isobel all about Taboo’s mission and how Isobel and Eloise were inspired to create their social enterprise. We discuss the reality of the facts behind menstrual stigma, hygiene challenges and period poverty around the world, and how Taboo is working with charity partner One Girl to bridge the supply gap for those who need period necessities the most, and providing all important education through school visits. We also chat about what it was like starting a social enterprise and overcoming challenges along the way. Big congrats to Isobel who was announced as Young South Australian of the year 2021 for the hard work Isobel and the dedicated volunteer team have invested into Taboo. A truly educational and inspirational episode that we all need to hear. I learnt ALOT speaking with Isobel and I hope you find this episode as informative and it inspires you to also take action and support Taboo and their amazing mission.
