Trump rambled about NATO because NATO countries didn't agree to support his elective actions. His rhetoric has led to a flood of questions. First, we'll go over what he said and then get to the key questions. Trump said, quote,
Why would we be there for them if they're not there for us? They weren't there for us. That sounds like a breaking story. Yes, sir.
Chapter 2: How does NATO's obligation work in relation to U.S. actions?
Is that breaking news? I think we just have breaking news. But that's the fact. I've been saying that. Why would we be there for them if they're not there for us? They weren't there for us. We spend hundreds of billions of dollars a year on NATO. Hundreds. Protecting them.
And we would have always been there for them.
Chapter 3: What does the NATO treaty say about member obligations?
But now, based on their actions, I guess we don't have to be, do we? This really shows that Trump doesn't understand what NATO is, its obligations, or its history. Now that you know the purpose of NATO and that it's a hedge against a U.S. competitor in Europe, it's important to acknowledge that European nations can't stay off the front line because they are the front line for NATO.
