From the decline in tourism nationwide hitting Miami as a whole, to immigration policies, to his tariffs hitting Miami's port, to rhetoric about everything south of the border. Trump's statements just hit different in Miami. Higgins seems to be keenly aware of this. After her victory speech, she said, quote,
We are facing rhetoric from elected officials that is so dehumanizing and cruel, especially against immigrant populations. The residents of Miami are ready to be done with that. Ken Martin, chair of the DNC, echoed her statement, saying, Tonight's result is yet another warning sign to Republicans that voters are fed up with their out-of-touch agenda that is raising costs.
Now, it's worth noting that being the mayor of Miami is a role that has limited power when it comes to government functions, but it's an incredibly symbolic role that is high profile even under normal circumstances. The win for Democrats is going to be seen as a bellwether for the midterms and add to the perception that Trump's coattails aren't long enough to ride on anymore.
Beyond that, the mayor's role is going to be even more high-profile, as it's seen as the gateway to the South, and Trump's foreign policy shift that direction will elevate the visibility.
